Accessibility
How this site is built to be usable by everyone, what we have tested, and what is still wrong with it.
- Effective
- Last updated
We want rootnet.ai to work for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, navigate by keyboard, need larger text, or need less movement on screen.
What we are aiming for
We build this site to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That is the current version of the international standard, published by the World Wide Web Consortium.
We also aim at three Level AAA criteria, because they matter for the way this site looks and moves:
- 2.4.13 Focus Appearance, so you can always see where the keyboard is
- 2.3.3 Animation from Interactions, so movement stops when you ask it to
- 2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced), so the main buttons and links are comfortably large
Where we are today
This site is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Partially conformant means most of it meets the standard, and we know about the parts that do not. Those are listed below.
The reason it is not "fully conformant" is that the site is still being built. We evaluate a page when it is published, and we change the date at the top of this one when we do.
What we have done
- Every page can be used with a keyboard alone, and the focus indicator is always visible. It is drawn as a bright ring inside two dark ones, so it stays visible on every background on the site, including the moving one.
- Text meets a contrast ratio of at least 4.5 to 1 against its background. Interface elements meet at least 3 to 1. A script recomputes every colour pair on the site rather than us checking by eye, and it fails if a pair stops passing.
- Text sits on an opaque panel wherever the moving background is behind it, so the contrast holds on every frame of the animation and not just the first one.
- Headings, landmarks and lists are marked up properly, so a screen reader can move around the page.
- Every page starts with a skip link, so you can jump straight to the main content.
- The page works at 320 pixels wide and at 400% zoom without scrolling sideways.
- Everything is set in relative units, so the text follows the font size you have set in your browser.
- Colour is never the only thing carrying a meaning. Anything shown in colour is also said in words or shape.
- The site respects reduced motion, more contrast, reduced transparency and forced colours, if your device asks for them.
- There is no third party script on any page, so nothing outside our control can change how the site behaves for you.
- We have not installed an accessibility overlay or a toolbar widget, and we will not. They do not fix the underlying problems and they often get in the way of the assistive technology you already use.
There is no form anywhere on this site yet. When one is added, it will have real labels, instructions before the field rather than after it, and errors written in words.
The background animation
The moving network behind the page is decoration. It is hidden from screen readers, it is not in the reading order, and nothing in it can be reached with the keyboard.
- There is a control to pause it. It sits in the footer of every page, and it is also the second thing you reach with the Tab key, so the movement can be stopped within two key presses. Your choice is remembered in your browser.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, nothing moves at all. You get a still version, which we drew on purpose rather than leaving as a leftover. That setting lives under Accessibility in your operating system and we read it automatically. You do not have to do anything.
- Nothing on this site flashes. No element changes brightness more than three times a second, there is no hard blinking, and there is no flashing red.
Known problems
These are the ones we know about. If you find another, please tell us.
- The site is not finished. Only the pages published today have been evaluated. New pages are evaluated as they are published.
- We have not done a full screen reader pass yet. The markup is written for one and has been checked structurally, but that is not the same thing as sitting down with a screen reader and using the site. That is planned before this site is published.
How we tested
Last assessed on , by us.
We used:
- automated checks with axe-core, run against every published page in a real browser
- a contrast script that recomputes every colour pair on the site and fails the build if one drops below its threshold
- keyboard only navigation, checking tab order, focus visibility and that nothing traps the keyboard
- 400% browser zoom, and a 320 pixel wide viewport
- reduced motion, forced colours and increased contrast, all emulated
This assessment was done by us. It has not been reviewed by anyone else, and we have not commissioned an independent accessibility audit. Automated tools also find only a minority of real accessibility problems, so a clean automated result is a floor and not a finish line. We would rather tell you that than let a passing score do work it cannot do.
Tell us if something does not work
If you hit a barrier on this site, please tell us. It is the fastest way for us to fix it, and we would rather hear about it than not.
Email rutvik@flareware.app with "Accessibility" in the subject line, and say which page you were on and what happened. We aim to reply within five working days.
If you are not happy with our reply, say so and tell us why. There is no separate complaints team to be passed along to. The same address reaches the person who can change the site.
